BLACKSMITHING : FORGING A KITCHEN KNIFE : FULL LENGTH FILM
This full length film shows my own way of forging billets and blades- some of which is very traditional and some are just techniques I have picked up from other makers over the years (probably some bad habits in there as well). Primarily I am a blade-smith , not a knife maker and I aim to show quite simply how I do things but each smith must find their own style and approach.
I hope you enjoy watching the processes and feel free to ask me any questions.

Blacksmithing : DAMASCUS KNIFE HANDLE FITTING - PART 4
Просмотров 834Месяц назад
Part 4 of How to Forge a Damascus Knife shows how I prepare and fit the material for the handle of this multi layer chef knife. The handle is made up of a stainless steel , laser cut , bolster, Red G10 spacer and stabilised Oak with a stainless pin. The Oak was given to me by a local boat builder, cut to shape and stabilised to seal and fill in some of the wormholes - this piece is around 70 ye...
Blacksmithing : GRINDING A DAMASCUS KNIFE BLADE - PART 3
Просмотров 748Месяц назад
Part 3 of How to Forge a Damascus Knife explores the heat treating and quenching of the blade followed by set-up and bevel grinding to a satin finish. The final stage of this part of the process is etching and making the knife ready to fit the handle. Grinding the bevels is honestly my least favourite stage of the whole process - and the one that I am least proficient at ! Still for all of us -...

TEXTURES OF STEEL
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.3 месяца назад
How do you forge textures into the surface of a steel plate ? This video explores the two principle ways that I create some of my tableware pieces - hand forging and the use of a hydraulic press. Starting in 1996 at art college , where I began to explore the plasticity of hot steel and ending with some of my most recent pieces forged for Michelin star restaurants. This is a very personal film a...

How did they do the grinding in ancient times? what did they use as oil? were they having a bucket full of oil in their shops? i d like so much to see how blacksmiths 1000 years ago really did these blades... a wonderful video, this one, by the way.... beautifully relaxing and stimulating. thank you😊
Sheer masculine force and craftsmanship literally kept us alive through the ages. As a woman, I find this activity fascinating but I wouldn't be strong enough to do it, and even more, part of me would think: why bother? On the contrary, most men love to manipulate material, experiment, build, break. On my part, I am strong enough to carry a child in my arms and on my body for months, and my love for gentle touching makes sure I know how to comfort her. An artisan is silent while working. A mom is always speaking and singing, and so the little ones feel safe and learn sounds. Thinking about such activities that men and women have been mainly focusing on for millenia makes me appreciative of my past, the way I'm made and of the beautiful complementarity between men and women. I love love love watching men at work.
really love this style of video. awesome vibe. great work!
That's one hell of an art. Jesus would be proud, you got a gift. God bless.
Hand forged tools and utensils, wild foraging, slow cooking and sharing food with friends, this is what life's about. Thanks for sharing, you have given me inspiration for some new projects.
👍✌️⚒️
Ok, beautiful etching, but I have questions. You used nickel and chrome vanadium for a jacket, and a medium to hi carbon, low alloy steel for the core. The jacket material would hold an edge better than the core material. For why? I've been known to do things ass backwards, but from a performance standpoint, put the alloy stuff on the edge. Good job on creating a mystery. Darn nice knife.
Beautiful piece of art thanks for sharing godbless and good health.
Can I ask you about your etching process? I tried to do a kitchen knife out of 80CrV2, but every time I etched it in the acid, the dark color would wash right off. I was worried about the dark color coming off into someone's food, so I ultimately ended up making it silver instead of the black that I wanted.
Very nice , enjoyed.
Nice looking knife, i love how it has that bigger pattern with only a few visible layers. I find the super layered damascus patterns quite ugly.
Great video! One suggestion that you might find helpful is to not drag the point past the edge of the belt when grinding. It will produce a much sharper point.
can u send a like for ur coffee heating plate?
Awesome ! Just watching you enjoy your God, Givin talent inspires me. I'm banging on sheet metal, fixing a door on an old truck.😊
thanks and keep on hammering ...
Amazing step by step video series thanks Alex I’ve got to give it a go now.
What type of steel did you use and where did you get it? I have been looking online for something like that for like an hour now
just from our local steel merchant .
@alexpoleblacksmith Well I kind of meant the measurements and type?
@@DrunkenDragon788 I buy 3 meter lengths of 8mm round mild steel
@@alexpoleblacksmith Ah, thanks a ton!
Were square nails the norm back in the day?
Hi - yes square nails were the most common shape as it's less work to forge a square taper than a round. Also better for driving into timber
Amazing job !
thank you
What size round bar you use
8 mm round mild steel
True art.😊 Merry Christmas.
thanks and merry Christmas
Nice, Ready for more.
About time.
the medieval pricker or eating spike was very prevalent throughout the medieval period, people bought an eating knife and pricker everywhere they went, one would stab the food with the pricker, cut off a chunk with the eating knife and use the pricker to bring it your mount.
what size steel are u using?
Hi . This is 8mm round mild steel
Really high Quality cookware. Im planning to buy several frying pans. I was wondering: In the video you said the steel sheet is 3 mm thick. When looking at the sides, the sides are smaller than 3 mm. Is the cooking surface 3 mm and the sides thinner? What are the different thickness dimensions of the finished pan? Thanks in advance. 👍👍
Hi. The sheets does get a little thinner as it is spun. The edge thickness varies from pan to pan but average is 2-3 mm
Give your head a wobble
I've seen a few different ways making nails and how you put it in the vice and hit the top and its done it a quick and efficient way thanks heaps appreciated the video
Parabéns pela forjaria é tudo para mim a arte milenar. ...
Great stuff. 👍👍
Thanks 👍
You got into recommended to a soon gonna be engineer so the algorithm has got your back
glad to hear it
This type of precise patterning is exactly why I bought a flypress Very cool and really attractive work Thanksyou for sharing
Very nicely edited, great topic that moves you... thanks for sharing... the peace, quiet and your thoughts are very well conveyed. ... I have a feeling ... ❤️🔥🔨
Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed. A very personal subject for me .
Lovely. ❤
Love nail making videos. Shows people that blacksmithing is not always just knife/sword making
AWESOME 👍
thanks
Texture is life.
I agree ...
About time.
I just watched Alex steele's video where he made 500 nails in just over 12 hours now he did several thing differently to you his nail were smaller about an inch and he used a tool to hold the nail while shaping the head. He showed a film of an old blacksmith making nails they used under 30 or 40 strikes to shape it, the used a tool where after shaping the nail they dropped it into this tool and formed the head and they did it in one heat
That's correct and certainly the most traditional way to forge nails . I haven't watched the film but he probably used a 'nail header' . I have been forging nails in a less traditional way using a leg vice as it was always much easier to teach beginners that way. On average I can make 25-30 an hour of the 3" nails. Thanks for watching and new film coming soon
Neat video and process. Music on the video was a bit loud compared to the vocals.
Thank you for the feed back ... I'll take a look and work on it . Cheers
Fantastic work Alex & Team. Inspiring ❤️🔥
thanks man ... next film coming up soon. I Think you will like it
what a gorgeous work!!!
Que bruto son los hijos de vulcano.
What is the whait pen? I'm ruky blacksmith😅
Thanks for a great video depicting some great craftsmanship and care given to an otherwise overlooked tool.
👍✌️⚒️

What sort of variation do you get piece to piece?
we try to get as little as possible but of course each piece is slightly different . All part of the beauty I think
@@alexpoleblacksmith yeah, that slight variation is a nice aspect of hand made things. Also when the same person tries the same idea repeatedly and you see the evolution in their execution of the idea
So what is a two tine fork then, a bident?
Yeah.
Beautiful pans. The handle shape is so important to the daily enjoyment of using a pan. But so often done poorly.
Amazing work as always 👍👍
